As peaceful as mesas may appear, these are harsh environments, formed of weathered and weakened, eroded rock and uplifting of more resistant rocks by tectonic activity, breaking the sides into a staircase pattern called "cliff-and-bench topography". Since mesas are horizontal rock layers, so was this rug hooked in colorful, blended horizontal rows of every imaginable color of a western sunset.
